The International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) was developed by the European Railway Industry Association (UNIFE) working group. The purpose of the standard is to create a business management system that allows have permanent improvements, emphasizing the prevention and the defects number reduction in the Supply Chain.

The IRIS certification mechanism is based on the approach in which each site is certified separately, therefore certification of several sites at the same time is not applicable to the process of assessing compliance with the IRIS standard (as it is assumed by other certification processes, for example, according to ISO 9001).

The IRIS standart application area is the development and implementation of a global business management system in the railway industry, which includes:

  • the international standard of the railway industry IRIS with requirements;
  • a special questionnaire;
  • level of maturity and scoring;
  • evaluation process with appropriate rules that must be complied with by IRIS-approved certification bodies;
  • IRIS web portal (database) and auditing tool "Audit-Tool" (software);
  • the auditor's records and the results of the audits are stored in the database.
